My parents always told me I was the only ‘planned’ one, that my brother and sister were surprises. I think deep down that pressure to convince them they planned well has always made me push myself, to be my harshest critic.
One thing is for sure, they didn’t plan on me trying to make a living with a camera. People have tried to talk me out of it. I’ve tried to talk other people out of it. Even after winning North Carolina Photographer of the Year two years in a row, my younger brother told me a “three-peat” would sound a lot better than “two-peat.”
I’ve worked real jobs before. My resume includes CD stacker at Best Buy, construction worker and professional window washer. But my camera always took me to much more exciting places. I have sat with families that lost their homes in hurricanes, walked on thin ice (literally) to befriend ice fishermen and played games with Rajasthani school children. My pictures have appeared on enough front pages to fill a closet. But I learned from the start that I’m more interested in creating images than building one for myself. People and pictures, moving and still, are my life.
Come to me with your ideas, I’ll get excited. If not, I’ll most certainly get you excited about mine.
